7 Fast Facts About the 2021 AP Exams

AP Exams are quickly approaching, and we want to make sure that you have all the information you need for your exam(s). Here are the seven facts you need to know about this year’s AP Exams, which begin May 3, 2021.

1. Your school will make decisions about what AP Exam administration options are available to you.

  • Make sure you talk to your AP teacher and/or AP coordinator for more information on how, when, and where you’ll take your AP Exams this year.

2. All AP Exams, regardless of format, will be full length.

3. You have access to free, online resources to prepare for your exams.

  • AP Daily videos in AP Classroom help you build your knowledge and skills.
  • AP Daily: Live Review sessions will stream on YouTube April 19–29 and be uploaded to AP Classroom for you to watch anytime, anywhere.

4. If you’re taking digital AP Exams, you must complete these three steps before exam day.

  • Download the exam application.

    • Download the application on the device you’ll use on exam day.
    • If you’re using a school-managed device, be sure to find out when the app will be installed for you.
  • Practice in the application.

    • 2 types of practice are available:
      • App Demo: Quickly confirm that the application is correctly installed, that questions display appropriately, and that you can enter answers.
      • Digital Practice: Fully explore the digital testing application.
    • Remember to practice only when you have enough time to finish and on the device that you'll use to test. To see how long practice is for your course, visit your course’s exam page.
  • Complete exam setup.

    • For each digital AP Exam you take, you must complete the exam setup step in the digital testing app. This step loads your exam onto the computer you’re going to test with.
    • You’re required to take this step 1–3 days before each exam. If you don’t take this step for each exam, you won’t be able to test.

5. Students taking digital exams can only test on a laptop or desktop computer.

  • Mac
  • Windows
  • School-managed Chromebook
    • A managed device means your school controls the programs that are installed.
    • Personal Chromebooks aren’t allowed.

6. Digital responses will be entered directly in the testing application.

  • Handwritten responses won't be allowed. Students can practice typing their responses by completing digital exam practice in the testing app.
  • Learn more about how to practice here.

7. Digital AP Exams start automatically at the same time worldwide, at 12 p.m. or 4 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).

    • Make sure you know what time zone you'll be in on exam day.
    • You’ll need to check in to your exam 30 minutes before your exam start time
